SpongeBob Crafting Afternoon at Balsall Common Library

We'll be hosting Arts Therapies UK for a special SpongeBob Crafting Afternoon at Balsall Common Library on Friday 31st May from 2.30pm to 4pm.

FREE for all children aged 6 to 10 years of age - take part in special SpongeBob crafty activities, make friends and have fun!

Grown-ups must stay with their child whilst taking part in the crafting afternoon.

Welcome to Solihull - a short guided walk around the historic centre of Solihull

To mark the occasion exactly 70 years ago - 12 noon on 24th May 1954 - when the Municipal Borough of Solihull came into existence, join the Council's Archivist & Local Studies Librarian, Tracey Williams, on this short guided walk around the historic heart of Solihull town centre.

Starting from The Core, the walk will proceed via Touchwood and Manor Walk onto Church Hill and then to The Square, the High Street, and back to the Core through the Mill Lane Arcade, Touchwood. It should take around an hour.

The route is less than 1km and is paved and flat throughout, so is suitable for wheelchair users. Regrettably, dogs (apart from assistance dogs) are not permitted on the walk.

If possible, attendees are asked to bring along their own wired headphones (3.5mm headphone jack) as the commentary from the walk leader will be transmitted via audio guide receivers.

Elmer Day Story Time at Hobs Moat Library

Come along to our special story time celebrating Elmer's 35th birthday! We will be reading Elmer stories, playing pin the trunk on Elmer and decorating Elmer stick puppets alongside our usual rhyme time session.

Non-regular Little Hobbit attendees should book a place for each child that will be attending.

Repair and Share at Dickens Heath Library

Our next 'Repair Shop' inspired event will take place on Saturday 18th May.

Our fantastic team of volunteer repairers will be on hand, offering repairs to all kinds of items including clothing, toys and bikes; plus advice on a variety of practical projects.

Refreshments will be available.

Booking not required, just drop in.

The Writers' Room - May Meet-up

Have you always dreamed of writing a novel?

Are you looking for writerly friends to share your passion with?

Would you love feedback on your short story?

Join the sixth session of our monthly writers' group at Dickens Heath Library, on Saturday 25 May at 10am.

On the last Saturday of each month, we will use our meet-up to focus on a particular writing skill and discuss it as a group. An optional task will then be set for our writers to share and receive feedback from each other (if requested).

The Writers' Room is intended for fiction writers (published, aspiring, or total beginners) of all genres, genders, and abilities to learn, share, and support each other.

Participation can be as active or passive as suits each individual writer.

Registration is required as spaces are limited. Please speak to a member of staff in Dickens Heath Library if you would like any further information.

Early Years Music at The Core Library

A Postcard from Balsall Common - Local History Event

This May, Balsall Common Library will be once again inviting patrons and the local community to take a trip down memory lane remembering life in Balsall Common and the surrounding areas.

A Postcard from Balsall Common is a project first run in 2020, and this Local and Community History Month the library will be encouraging the sharing of memories by filling in a postcard in the library to be pegged on a special ‘reminiscence washing line’.

On Thursday 23rd May there will be a Reminiscence Cafe as part of this event.

The library is especially keen to hear from anyone who has any old photographs, newspaper articles, and other items of interest concerning the area and its history. Any information about shops and businesses that are no longer with us or local individuals of note would also be gratefully received.

As well as sharing newly collected memories and local history with the community, the library will also be preserving them for posterity by adding copies to the Solihull Heritage & Local Studies Service.
