Middlefield opened in Knowle in 1874 and was known as the Midland Counties Idiot Asylum. It was subsequently renamed the Midland Counties Asylum, then the Midland Counties Institution. It was renamed Middlefield Hall in 1948, before becoming Middlefield Hospital by 1960. It was just Middlefield by the time of its closure in 1992.
