Notes:
Ernest Henry "Chinese" Wilson (1876-1930), a plant collector who grew up in Shirley, was sent to China in 1899 by Harry James Veitch, of James Veitch & Son, to try to find the Davidia Involucrata, otherwise known at the Handkerchief or Dove Tree. In 1903, Veitch sponsored another China trip by Ernest Wilson, this time to find Meconopsis Integrifolia, the yellow poppy or lampshade poppy. This booklet looks at the Veitch family and includes photographs of a Handkerchief Tree in bloom in Northernhay Gardens, Exeter.
