Botsford grew up in a Manhattan townhouse under the eye of five servants, a cultivated stepfather, and a mother whose beauty attracted many admirers. Botsford attended Yale, married a nice girl, worked as a reporter on The New Yorker and then in 1942, his life of privilege was interrupted when he was drafted into the infantry.
