Acclaimed BBC adaptation of Dostoevsky's classic novel. Poverty-stricken ex-student Raskolnikov (John Simm) plans the murder of a hated, local pawnbroker, not only to alleviate his financial problems, but also as an existential exercise, feeling himself to be an extraordinary being, able to commit such acts without guilt, remorse or justification. However, after the bungled murder attempt, Raskolnikov soon suffers psychological problems, alerting investigating detective Porfiry (Ian McDiarmid) to his guilt.
